Do AI Overviews show for brand searches? What changed in September 2026

· 10 min read

Since late September 2026, yes, for most of the brand queries that three separate reports checked. An AI Overview is Google's own AI-written answer, shown among the ordinary results, and as late as July 2026 a bare company name rarely drew one in the samples published since.

Below, we look at the change as the company behind the name sees it: what changed, where the summary sits, what it draws on, and how to check your own.

Two things you should know about us first. We make software that follows which sources AI assistants put in their answers, so this subject is close to our business. And we have measured none of this ourselves. Every figure below belongs to someone else, and each one arrives with its owner, its date and as much of its sample as its owner states.

Do AI Overviews show for brand searches now?

Three reports published between 30 September and 2 October 2026 found an AI Overview on most of the brand queries they checked; two of them checked large, well-known brands, and DemandSphere does not say whose keywords it tracks.

On 30 September 2026, 93 of 101 brand queries returned an AI Overview in a test SEO practitioner Chris Long ran that day through SerpApi, a service that returns Google results as data, on a list he drew up himself. His post on X said Google "is starting to show AI Overviews for a ton of branded queries", naming Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon and Adobe, and the results table later in the same thread counts 101 queries. Chris Long's LinkedIn post that day, and Ahrefs' study after it, give the same test as 93 of 100 enterprise brands.

On 1 September 2026, 26.12% of DemandSphere's tracked branded keywords returned an AI Overview; on 29 September, 82.06%, after a high of 90.48% on 27 September. DemandSphere, which sells tracking software, checks each keyword once a day across all markets and devices and counts it as present whether or not it cites the company. Its 1 October post does not say how many keywords the set holds.

On 30 September 2026, 63 of the 100 global brand names in Ahrefs' panel had an AI Overview, against five of 98 usable results on 1 July; Ahrefs says the appearance of AI Overviews "vastly increased at the start of September". In the largest of the three studies, published on 2 October, Ahrefs also counted 92.5 million branded-keyword crawls of US desktop results from July to September, and the monthly share of branded keywords with one rose from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September.

The three reports count three different things (one person's list on one day, one tracker's keyword set by day, and one company's crawls plus a fixed panel drawn from Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2025), and all three point the same way. None is a rate for every company, and none gives a rate for small ones.

What did a brand search look like before September?

Before September 2026, a search for a bare company name rarely got an AI Overview on Google: five of 98 in Ahrefs' panel on 1 July 2026, and none of the dozens of other brands Search Engine Roundtable tried in September 2024.

Under the words AHREFS PANEL and WITH AI OVERVIEW, two equal plates side by side: a white plate reading 5 OF 98 above the date 1 JUL 2026, and a solid orange plate reading 63 OF 100 above the date 30 SEP 2026.
One fixed Ahrefs panel of 100 global brand names, drawn from Interbrand's Best Global Brands 2025, read on two dates: an AI Overview on five of the 98 results it could use on 1 July 2026, and on 63 of the 100 on 30 September. The panel holds large, well-known brands, so neither reading is a rate for every company.

On 26 September 2024, Search Engine Roundtable wrote that "Google AI Overviews generally do not show up for branded or navigational queries"; the one exception the post reported, spotted by Victor Pan, was HubSpot. In June 2025, Neil Patel wrote on LinkedIn that from "a sample of 1.5 million search queries", "it looks like AI Overviews aren't affecting branded searches too often". Ahrefs' October study says its own research from November 2025 found them "vastly more common for unbranded queries than for branded queries", and adds: "That is clearly no longer the case." Branded keywords as a whole were already another matter: across Ahrefs' crawls, 61.3% had an AI Overview in July 2026. We read that as a change concentrated on the bare name, going by Ahrefs' two measures (a weekly panel and monthly averages), which are not strictly comparable.

Google's own documentation still describes a feature that holds back. Search Central, last updated on 10 December 2025, says AI Overviews "are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger". Google's Ads help says they trigger on "generally 'no one right answer' queries, like complex queries or queries where it may be helpful to get information from a range of web pages". We think a company's name is about the plainest one-right-answer query there is, which is why this change is worth noticing.

We found no statement from Google about it when we looked on 5 October 2026, and DemandSphere's post says "Google has not made any announcements on this change."

None of the readable pages ranking for this question in the United States on 5 October 2026 mentions the change either. The newest dated one, iCrossing's guide of 1 September 2026, says "AI Overviews appear for both brand and non-brand queries" from tracking "over 5,000 queries", without counts for either group.

Where does the AI Overview sit on your own results page?

On 30 September 2026, Search Engine Roundtable's screenshots placed the AI Overview below most companies' own listings, while Ahrefs counted it in position one for 48 of 63 names.

Search Engine Roundtable's post of 30 September says "most of the examples have the AI Overview showing up lower down in the search results page, not at the top of the page". In its screenshot for "wikipedia", the summary comes after two Wikipedia results in the traditional listings; Adobe is the exception, with it at the top. Barry Schwartz found the feature missing for Google's own name and for news publications.

Ahrefs reports an average position of 1.49 for the 63 in its panel that had one, and adds that "It's possible that Google will choose to move these AI Overviews lower in the SERP".

We think both reports can be accurate at once. Barry Schwartz's screenshots are one person scrolling on one day, Ahrefs' figure is a fixed panel of 100 names checked weekly, and the layout of a results page can differ by device, country and moment. Neither report is a rule for your own results page.

If you bid on your own name, Google's Ads help says ads "are eligible to be shown above, below or within AI Overviews", with "within" currently limited to English in 12 listed countries.

What does the summary draw on?

In Ahrefs' panel of 100 global brand names, published on 2 October 2026, most citations to sites other than the company's own went to Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn.

In Search Engine Roundtable's screenshots, the summary for "wikipedia" cites Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation, and the one for "amazon" cites Amazon.com and Yahoo Finance. In Ahrefs' panel, only two of the 58 answers it could read in full discussed a competitor, and one competitor-owned site appeared across 57 lists of cited sources.

Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn also sit near the top of the AI citation indexes we compared side by side. There is a limit to this, though: these are global companies with large third-party profiles, and a smaller company's name may draw on quite different pages. Nobody we read has published a measured sample of smaller companies, and the spot checks we read went both ways: Chris Long wrote that he "also checked for smaller companies (like ours)" and found AI Overviews present, while Barry Schwartz found none for the bare name of RustyBrick, the New York web firm he runs.

Can Search Console tell you whether your name gets one?

Search Console cannot tell you whether your name returned an AI Overview: the generative AI performance report Google rolled out worldwide on 31 August 2026 lists no query dimension.

Under the words GROUPED BY, a row of five equal squares: four solid blue squares above PAGE, COUNTRY, DATE and DEVICE, then, set apart, one empty square outlined in orange above QUERY and the words NOT LISTED.
The ways Search Console's generative AI performance report splits its counts, as Google's own help page listed them when we checked it on 6 October 2026: page, country, date and device. No query is among them, so the report cannot pick out a search for your company's name.

The report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together. Google's help page for the report defines an impression as "how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search", grouped by page, country, date and device. By that definition, a summary on your name that linked only to Wikipedia would not register as yours at all.

Search Console's generative AI control, also worldwide since 31 August 2026, excludes your site from these features. Google's help page for the control says what that leaves behind: "Content from other sites will still be available in those features, and it may appear similar to yours." Whether that trade is worth making is your call, not ours.

How do you check your own company name?

The most direct check in October 2026 is to type your own company name into Google in each country you sell in and write down what appears, with the date.

  • Use the exact name, signed out, on mobile and on desktop. Note whether the summary appears and whether it sits above or below your own organic listing. Signing out is not enough to see another country's results: Google's Search Help says that even with Personalized Recommendations off, Google still uses "the area you're searching from, language, and device type", so for any other country, ask a colleague or customer there to run the check.
  • Open the summary's sources. Note which are yours and which belong to third parties.
  • Repeat on a fixed day each week. DemandSphere's own series fell from 55.81% on 24 September to 29.98% on 25 September, two days before its highest reading, so one look is one data point.

What an AI Overview does to clicks is a separate question, with its own studies that disagree. How often they appear across all queries is another, and our page on those prevalence figures sets out how much the make-up of a sample moves the answer, and a list of famous names is a sample too.

What you change on your own pages in response is yours to decide. Nothing we read establishes what decides whether a company's name gets one, and we cannot promise you a place in one.

What people actually ask us

What triggers a Google AI Overview?

Google's Search Help says an AI Overview appears "when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful – for example, when you want to quickly understand information from a range of sources", and Search Central adds that it must be "additive to classic Search". No Google page we read publishes a list of the queries that qualify; the nearest is the Ads help's description of "no one right answer" queries, and Search Central's page was last updated on 10 December 2025, before the September change on company names. We have not measured where the line sits.

Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI search?

Brand mentions in AI answers can be tracked within limits: Search Console reports when your pages appeared in Google's AI features, but not the query and not what the summary said about you. Brand-monitoring tools, including Ahrefs, DemandSphere and the kind of software we build, sample results pages and read what the AI answer says, which gives you visibility in a sample with a method. Ask any tracker to show you that method first.
